Research Progress

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is the most common type of scoliosis. It affects 3% of the population. The patient shows a Cobb angle greater than 10º and a 3-dimensional deformity.

Goals

The Fondation Yves Cotrel – Institut de France aims to address the lack of knowledge about the causes and mechanisms of idiopathic scoliosis.

Three goals stand out:

Identifying at-risk patients

Prevent scoliosis

Avoiding surgery

While treatments have evolved, one question remains unchanged :

Why does a column with intact structural elements start to turn on itself?

Areas of research

The discoveries made by the teams supported by the Cotrel Foundation have already led to changes in the way patients, children and adolescents are treated in the various research areas:

Genetic approach: The end of conventional wisdom

Biomechanical approach: Modification of non-operative treatment

Neuro-sensory approach: A better understanding of the patient

Metabolic approach: more precise medical support

The ciliary approach: a new line of research
