In 1999, Dr Yves Cotrel created the Cotrel Foundation – with the support of his wife and 8 children – to finance research in spine diseases.
Its primary mission is to help understanding the causes for scoliosis by supporting international and multidisciplinary teams.
The Foundation has a special working mode: the researchers meet in Paris at the end of every year to share insight about their progress and learn from each other’s knowledge and experience. The donors, greeted on the occasion, can attend the meeting and keep themselves informed on the achieved advancement.
The Foundation’s functioning
The scientific board consists of 10 members (periodically joined by 3 experts) who select the projects to be supported every year. Responsible for ethical standards, this Board provides regular follow-up of the teams, who furthermore commit to sharing information and to participating in a yearly meeting held by the Institut de France in Paris.
The executive board manages the foundation administratively and validates the budgets and grants to be allocated
The Foundation is a non-profit organization. Its administrative functioning is mainly based on a family heirloom that is handled by the Institut de France. The donations and bequests it receives are fully assigned to the supported research teams
