Cotrel Foundation

The Cotrel Spinal Research Foundation was established in 1999 under the aegis of the Institut de France, at the instigation of Dr. Yves Cotrel.

The Foundation’s primary area of research is idiopathic scoliosis (which means “scoliosis of unknown cause”). Scoliosis is spinal deformity. It is a common disease that affects about 1 to 3% children in the general population. It affects 4 girls for every boy.

The scientific board is composed of 11 members who select which projects will be supported each year.
Responsible for upholding ethics, the council assures a regular monitoring of each team such as their commitment to circulate information and to participate in the assembly organized once a year at the Institut de France in Paris.

The administrative board manages the administrative functioning of the Foundation and validates the budgets and the allocated grants.

Why support the Foundation ?

Early screening and surgical treatments have considerably progressed over the past few years, but these are only palliative treatments.

The real problem lies elsewhere : We must go back to its source

The Foundation has decided to select and finance the most promising research programs focusing on the origin of idiopathic scoliosis in order to provide early detection of its progressive forms, and even better, to prevent its occurrence. Because the questions raised fifty years ago are still waiting to be answered today.
